Grid & Snapping
Use the grid and snapping features to create precise, well-organized diagrams.
Grid Visibility
Showing/Hiding the Grid
Toggle grid visibility:
- View → Show Grid (Cmd+')
When visible, the grid appears as a pattern of lines or dots on the canvas, helping you align objects visually.

Snap to Grid
Enabling Snap
When snap to grid is enabled, objects automatically align to grid intersections:
- View → Snap to Grid (Cmd+Shift+')
This applies when:
- Moving objects
- Resizing objects
- Drawing new shapes
How Snapping Works
With snap enabled:
- Object edges and corners snap to the nearest grid line
- Objects "jump" to grid positions as you drag
- Resize handles align to grid intersections
Grid Size
Adjusting Grid Spacing
Customize the distance between grid lines:
- Open Diagrammix3 → Preferences...
- Go to the Canvas section
- Adjust Grid Size
Common grid sizes:
- 8px: Fine control, good for detailed work
- 16px: Balanced spacing (default)
- 24px: Coarse grid, faster alignment
- 32px: Large spacing for bigger diagrams
Choosing the Right Size
Consider your diagram's needs:
- UI mockups: 8px matches common design grids
- Flowcharts: 16-24px provides comfortable spacing
- Architecture diagrams: 24-32px for larger shapes
Grid vs Smart Guides
Both features help with alignment but work differently:
| Feature | Grid | Smart Guides |
|---|---|---|
| Visual reference | Always visible | Appear during movement |
| Alignment basis | Fixed intervals | Other objects |
| Best for | Consistent spacing | Relative alignment |
| Can be combined | Yes | Yes |
Using Both Together
For maximum precision:
- Enable grid snap for consistent positioning
- Enable smart guides for alignment with existing objects
- Use grid for initial placement, guides for final adjustment
Temporary Override
Disable Snap Temporarily
Hold Cmd while dragging to temporarily disable grid snapping, allowing freeform positioning.
Precise Positioning
For exact coordinates without snapping:
- Select the object
- Use the Inspector Panel's Geometry section
- Enter exact X and Y values
Tips
- Start with snap on: Enable snap before creating a diagram for consistent alignment
- Adjust for zoom: Grid may be too fine or coarse at certain zoom levels
- Use for spacing: Grid ensures equal gaps between elements
- Match your shapes: Set grid size to match common shape dimensions
